Beer flows down the streets of Bruges

faces-medium

You probably haven’t noticed when you were walking in Bruges these last couple of days, but beer has been flowing underneath the cobblestones since Friday. Brewery De Halve Maan brews the beers ‘Brugse Zot’ and ‘Straffe Hendrik’ in the city center, but the beers are bottled outside of the city.

To avoid daily transports by heavy trucks in the medieval center, the company decided to build a pipeline between its brewery and its bottling plant. The beer flows 3,2km in a plastic tube, which takes about 45 minutes. The pipeline can transport up to 6000 liters of beer an hour. At certain points in the city, you can find a peephole in the street, where you can see the pipelines. So next time you are admiring the beautiful buildings at Bruges, don’t forget to look down once in a while!
